001 Airstream Plant

Airstream: An American Icon.

Made in Ohio.

You’ll be riveted with nostalgia on our Taste of Travel tour of the Airstream plant in central Ohio. The retro styling of these iconic aluminum campers remains as appealing today as they were in the 1930s. Inspired by his wife’s disdain for camping, founder Wally Byam designed a tow-along trailer that “moves like a stream of air” and provided her with a proper bed and kitchen. With names like Land Yacht and Flying Cloud, the contemporary campers maintain a luxurious timelessness synonymous with Airstream. The company recently celebrated its 75th anniversary with a book “Wanderlust: Airstream at 75” – a title that clearly spoke to us and inspired this tour. We hope in turn our Campers and Cookery excursion inspires you to hit the road and indulge your sense of wanderlust and to go exploring here in Ohio – and beyond.

On Friday, June 18, our coach departs from Columbus for the Airstream factory in Jackson Center where we go behind-the-scenes with a private tour of the manufacturing process from start to finish. After a quick lap through the gift shop and a wander around the vintage trailer display, we’ll leave with a new appreciation for the silver bullets, which remain as sleek and modern as ever.

After the factory tour, we continue our Taste of Travel with a stop at an Ohio Proud-certified farm (location to be determined) for a cooking demonstration with Wanderlust Tours and culinary instructor, Shawnie Kelley Foy. As homage to the woman who inspired the creation of Airstream, we learn how to make a few updated retro camper-inspired dishes using local, seasonal ingredients from the farm – then dig in and enjoy. We end with some free time to shop the farm market, so bring a small cooler should you want to stock up on produce and other goods for your own camp side cookery.

Our tour arrives back in Columbus around 5 PM.
