The Iron Ring of Welsh Castles
King Edward I “Hammer of the Scots” built a series of innovative thirteenth century castles around the rugged, mountainous heartland of northern Wales.
King Edward I of England (1271-1307), also known as “Longshanks,” is best known for his military campaigns to subdue Scotland and Wales. Beginning in 1277, the “Hammer of the Scots” began a fearsome castle building campaign through Wales, constructing a ring of formidable fortresses known as the “Iron Ring”. Travel writer and architectural historian, Shawnie Kelley discusses the historical highlights, famous faces, construction techniques and innovations of several Edwardian castles, including Conwy, Caernarfon and Beaumaris.
