I have had longtime appreciation for the Omni Hotels brand and once again, they went above and beyond to help us put together a spontaneous trip to the historic Bedford Springs Resort just a few days out. The property is situated in the beautiful Allegheny Mountains of central Pennsylvania, where hot springs have drawn visitors to the region for 200+ years. I was looking to golf and use the spa, which they graciously arranged. We were treated to beautiful fall sunsets, a luxurious spa day, and 18 holes on the most epic golf course!  We were there in early November, so it was beginning to look a lot like Christmas (in terms of decorations, but not so much weather) – although the property is magnificent year round.

The Bedford’s architecture is colonial as there has been an inn/resort on this site since 1796. We noticed how the 2020 renovations have brought thoughtful design into the carpets, lighting and general patterns throughout the resort. Our bedroom overlooked the golf course, so we could enjoy beautiful  autumn sunsets through the mountains. The indoor pool was opened in 1905 as one of the first indoor pools in the country. The outdoor pool was not available since we were visiting in November. We took advantage of the temperate weather, to try our hand at one of the many activities available on property. I always wanted to try archery, so Dan arranged a lesson. 50 arrows, 2 finger bruises, and an inner arm welt later…   I’d be toast in Hunger Games, but it was fun! We finished off the night around the fire pit with drinks and a complimentary s’mores kit.

The Tavern lunch was nice- casual pub food with a pretty view. We enjoyed a decadent steak and lobster tail dinner in the 1796 Room, which is decorated in an early American style that is warm and sophisticated with fantastic service. Breakfast- even though I typically pass on buffets – was great! There were a lot of guests, so the food turned over quickly and came out fresh on a regular basis. My birthday dessert was the famous 17-layer “Death by Chocolate” chocolate cake. Made of chocolate devils food cake with alternating caramel and hazelnut mousse layers, topped with gianduja mousse (chocolate hazelnut paste). That’s 8 1/2 layers of each! We might have even licked the plate.

I’ll review the Springs Eternal spa separately as it is available for the public to use as a day spa, which we find rare for these types of resorts. In warmer weather, the outdoor pool is open and there are a few trail heads around the property that lead through gorgeous mountain scenery. I adore this resort and appreciate how Omni, the Historic Hotels of America and the National Registry for Historic Places maintain wonderful custodianship of Bedford Springs. Bedford remains one of my favorite road trips from Columbus as it is about a 4 1/2 hour drive and makes for a romantic getaway or luxurious long weekend.
