Did you know… that Nantucket is home to the country’s oldest continuously operating windmill? The Old Mill was built in 1746 on a hill just outside of downtown Nantucket. Its location helped it to survive several city-wide fires, including the devastating Great Fire of 1846. The “lever” was pulled by horses or cows to turn the roof/ arms into the wind. You’ll see the roof sits on a turnstile of sorts. The Mill is operated by the Nantucket Historical Association.
