Throughout February, our Got Wanderlust pictures celebrate National Castle Month! We kick things off in the country of Wales, where some of the world’s most spectacular and best preserved medieval castles exist. Our picture is of – a medieval fortress in north-west Wales cared for by Cadw, the Welsh Government’s historic environment service. The current stone structure was built by English King Edward I as part of his military campaign to suppress Wales. In 1284 Edward II was born in this castle, which prompted the creation of the title Prince of Wales. Visit the castle to see the stone where the Prince of Wales is traditionally invested.

Wanderlust Tours owner and docent, Shawnie Kelley, studied architectural history and worked as an architectural historian for both Historic Scotland and English Heritage. She conducts tours through many of Europe’s great castles and cathedrals. Photo: BritainExpressCaernarfon Castle.
